The laboratory is anchored to the construction goal of "first in China and first-class in the world", with an investment of 6.8 billion yuan in 5 years, and 20 billion yuan in investment from the whole society in 10 years. Williams is an internationally renowned electrophysiologist, expert in cellular and systems neuroscience. He has held faculty and visiting scientist appointments on four continents (MRC-Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK; HHMI Janelia Farm, USA; Queensland and Monash Universities, Australia). Professor Williams has pioneered the investigation of neuronal circuit function.
